GOLF COURSES
|
|
|
|
Spain's Costa del Sol
is well known these days as the Costa del Golf, having dozens of golf
courses from Sotogrande all the way to Málaga. Now, the Costa de la Luz
is also becoming popluar for this sport and here are some of the golf
courses available to you in the west of Andalucia. |
|
Alcaidesa Links Golf Course |
|
San Roque, Cádiz |
|
|
Designed by Peter Alliss and Clive Clark. 18 holes, par 68, 4924
metres.
Alcaidesa Links Golf Course is the first competition standard golf
course in Spain which falls into the Links category.
Alcaidesa has been called a links because it is situated
along the coastline and because you need to know how to handle the wind.
Its spectacular layout borders the beach amidst hills and natural
vegetation.
It is good playing here when there is a little sea breeze in the air.
The course is very much in keeping with the spectacular vista over the
Mediterranean sea and the massive rock of Gibraltar which dominates a
large part of the course.
|
 |
|
However the type of soil, layout and breadth of the
landing areas are well suited to players of all ages and abilities who
are looking for a good day's golfing without having to bend the ball one
way or the other. The greens are not oversized or too complicated, but
to card a good score or win your bet, you will need to hit it straight
and have a good short game.
Pro Shop, Restaurant, Bar,
Driving Range, Putting and Chipping Green, Lessons; Rental Clubs,

Arcos Gardens Golf Club
|
Arcos de la Frontera,
Cadiz. |
 |
Arcos
Gardens is an amazing new
course which is officially opening in September 2006.
It is “the course” everyone is talking about in Andalucia and has
received rave reviews in national and European press.
The course is located next to the beautiful whitewashed
village of Arcos de la Frontera, with stunning views across a
breathtaking landscape, 25 minutes east of Montecastillo – 40
minutes away from Jerez town and the airport. It is the “must” play
golf course in this region of Cadiz.
There are hills and valleys and some rugged rocks,
coupled with some picturesque wild scenery adorned with colourful
wild flowers. Some holes go through avenues of cork trees and some
olive trees, it has an immediate air of maturity and is destined to
be in Spain’s top 5 courses very quickly. |
|
|
The Swedish PGA have already made it their winter headquarters, based
on playing the course in February 2006 (it is already open to play for
VIPS and invitees) and because the practice facilities are absolutely
superb.
Furthermore there is a
quaint and stylish 8 bedroom hotel in
hacienda style on
the course, and in addition,
the complex will include 470 homes and a hotel with about 100 bedrooms
(once an extension has been finished).

Bellavista Golf Club (1916) |
|
|
|
Huelva - Costa de la Luz |
|
|
|
 |
Bellavista Golf Club is
Huelva's second oldest golf club. It was established in 1976. Few
visitors to Southern Spain realise that this area was first visited
and colonised by the British well over 100 years ago. The club had
just nine holes until the early 1990's, but has now become a
full-length 18 hole course. The gently undulating terrain and soft
sea breezes make Bellavista a nice walk in the park, and the trees
provide ample shade. The result of this early development at
Bellavista Golf Club is a course that is more traditional than the
usual Spanish offering.
This is true members club in the British style.
More undulating than many in the coastal area, the course is a
challenge for most golfers that belies it's par of just 70.
|
|
|
|
|
|
With a number of long
par 5's and also some lengthy par 4's, just to reach the fantastically
manicured greens in regulation will be an acheivement for many.
Unfortunately, it is members-only at the weekends, but it is certainly
worth putting a weekday aside to book yourself a tee-time at this
course. Just to say that you have played at the second oldest course in
a country which has become the biggest golf destination in Europe should
be enough for most true golfers.

Benalup Golf & Country
Club |
| Vejer de la
Frontera, Cadiz. |
|
|
Benalup Golf Club is situated
high in the Janda Valley inland from the historic hilltop town of Vejer
de la La Frontera. With the fantasic and sumptuous Fairplay Golf Hotel
(luxury suites hotel) on site, your visit to Benalup will be very
worthwhile. The course itself is an interesting mix of well-designed
holes effectively using the contours of the natural terrain.
The greens and fairways are always in excellent condition, thanks mainly
to the 20 minute intervals between tee-off times, so waiting on the tee
is a very unlikely occurence. Fantastic views of the beautiful
surrounding hills and valleys are available from most holes. |
 |
|
Terracottem soil
conditioner has been incorporated into the root zone of the entire
course and this leads to a 50% reduction in the need to water the course
- a great benefit in these days of over-watering! The usual facilities
of driving range, putting and chipping greens, pro-shop and caddy master
are also available.
Although a little off the usual beaten track for UK golfers on their
Spanish golf holiday, a visit to Benalup is highly recommended. The
Fairplay Golf Hotel here is one of the best. A two or three night stay
will prove both relaxing and challenging in golf terms |

Corta Atalaya Golf Club |
|
|
Huleva - Costa de la
Luz |
|
|
Corta Atalaya is situated
on Huelva Montains and the visitor will find very nice mountain views in
the area.
A nine hole golf course, measuring 2300 metres, with three par´s 3,
five par´s 4 and one par 5. Two holes have tough slopes, after that,
the rest of the holes are fairly flat.
Wherever the British went, they took their sporting activities with
them. So it was when the Rio Tinto mining operation opened in Huleva in
the 19th century, that the mine managers decided to build an on site
golf course.
Corta Atalaya as it became known has moved since then - and in the early
1990's it was rebuilt on a new location which includes seeded tees and
greens. The fairways are still bare though, so golfers are given squares
of artificial grass to play from.

|
|
|
|
 |
Designed by
Spanish golfer Jose Maria Olazabal,
Costa Ballena Golf course
is a challenge for golfers of all abilities. The club boasts 27
holes, (3 x 9 holes) each named after the type of tree that flanks
the 9 hole layout, plus a 9 hole, true par-3 course and offers a
great range of Spanish golf holiday options.
Spread over a 100 hectare site running alongside the Atlantic coast,
this course is in keeping with the natural landscape and enhances
the beauty of the local environment. |
|
The first 18 holes are played between the Atlantic Ocean and the soft
plains of the interior. The par 72, 6215m design stretches over an area
of exceptional beauty flanked by sand dunes, gentle slopes and four
large lakes which come into play on many holes.
Holes 19 - 27 are located to the East of the first 18 and are designed
to complement the entire golf resort. The Costa Ballena Golf Club was
proud to host a recent semi final (autumn 2005) of the European Tour
Qualifying School.

Cadiz. |
|
|
|

|
Dunas de Donana Golf
Club is located at the southern end of one of the most important
national parks in Europe, El Coto de Donaña, and close to the Atlantic
Ocean. This location provides a real golfing gem with challenging holes,
well protected in many cases with water and bunkering.
The course itself is a challenge of the golfer's control and accuracy,
with some tight fairways and a considerable amount of water on some of
the holes - ready to swallow up your proV1's! When the wind blows in
off the Atlantic, what looks like a gentle stroll in fair weather can
become a real battle for even the most skilled of golfers!
The club house and other golf facilities at Dunas de Donana, plus the
town of Matalascanas, make this venue worth every minute of the drive
from the central part of the region. |

Golf El Puerto,

The Real Club de Golf of Sevilla
boasts one of Europe’s best courses. Designed by José María Olazábal,
this challenging course of wide fairways and numerous bunkers is held in
high esteem by amateurs and professionals alike.
The course is a par 72 and measures 6,529 metres. Its highly balanced
design makes it an excellent venue for any high-level competition, be it
amateur or professional.
This extensive course covers an area of 61 Ha. and boasts over 10,000
trees belonging to many different species, most of them native.
Spectacular bunkers and four lakes covering more than three hectares
make it a pleasant and challenging course. |
 |
The strategically placed lakes surround
many holes on the course, lowering the temperature and adding to the
course’s charm.There is also a 120-metre wide, 260-metre long driving
range sown with Bermuda 419 - as are the fairways. Next to the practice
ground are the large putting and chipping greens, with gradients similar
to those found on the course greens.

|
|
Cadiz. |
|
Sotogrande Golf
course is the first Robert Trent Jones course designed in Europe. Opened
in 1964., this is one of the coast's finest golf clubs and also one of
the best courses.
On a very quiet site, encircled by
majestic houses and enhanced with numerous trees (pine, olive, oak,
eucalyptus and palm trees), it seems a harder course than you would
like and yet easier than it looks. |
 |
|
This is partly because of the virtual
absence of rough, enabling long hitters to open their shoulders with no
worries other than avoiding the numerous water hazards, concentrated
particularly over the last holes.
With 18 holes Par 72 on 6298
metres, this is one of the best courses in Europe and is always a
pleasure to play. Mature trees line the fairways and large lakes
dominate the back nine, as imported Bermuda grass ensures lush fairways
and the lack of rough adds to the enjoyment of this wonderful golf
course. |

Sanlúcar Club de Campo,
an eighteen hole course was designed by three-time Spanish amateur

links, with small and deep bunkers, broad and curving fairways and large
open greens. There are parkland elements, seven lakes, an abundance of
trees, as well as fast and true greens in perfect condition. Some say
the Levante wind, which is particularly common in this part of the
coast, is calmer here but this is not always the
case! |

The

beautiful lakes, views over the sherry-growing vineyards and bunkers,

Vista Hermosa Golf Club
(9 holes) |
|
| El Puerto de
Santa María, Cadiz. |
|
|
Vista Hermosa is
located in the Bay of Cadiz about 1 kilometre from Puerto de Santa
Maria. It has mainly narrow fairways and greens, and is well protected
by the surrounding bunkers. Well established, the Vista Hermosa golf
course offers a serious challenge to all golfers.
Variety is the keynote with some holes requiring great accuracy thanks
to strategically placed water hazards.
Other holes are more open but there are plenty of trees ready to
penalise anyone straying off the straight and narrow.
One of the additional challenging factors of this golf course is the
prevailing "Levante" wind. An extension of a further nine holes is
imminent. |
